Prestige Beds

Case Study

A Legacy of Excellence and Sustainability

For over 65 years, Prestige Beds has been a cornerstone of quality sleep in the North West, blending heritage and innovation as a third-generation family business. With four stores across Lancashire and a growing online presence, Prestige Beds has always placed its customers and community at the heart of its operations. Sustainability has long been a natural extension of this commitment.

This case study explores Prestige Beds’ partnership with TFR Group, the UK’s leading mattress recycling specialist, to amplify its environmental goals while enhancing its customer experience.

The Challenge: Reducing Waste and Enhancing Circular Economy Efforts

As a responsible retailer, Prestige Beds had a longstanding practice of taking away old beds and mattresses from its customers. However, the need to do more became apparent as costs associated with landfill disposal increased, and the environmental impact of traditional waste methods became a growing concern.

“Our warehouses were filling a 40ft container every 3-4 weeks with old mattresses. The weight was astronomical, especially when they got wet, and the costs were unsustainable. We knew we needed a solution that was more responsible and effective,” said James Dunne, Operations Director of Prestige Beds.

The Solution: A Partnership with TFR Group

Prestige Beds partnered with TFR Group 18 months ago, having been drawn to its innovative recycling and mattress rejuvenation services. TFR Group not only recycles mattresses into 19 different material streams but also rejuvenates returned products, extending their lifecycle. “The rejuvenation side of things is still in its infancy for us, but it’s an exciting opportunity. It’s allowed us to offer sleep trials on more of our products with confidence, knowing we can quickly and cost-effectively bring returned mattresses back to mint condition,” added James.

This partnership has also enabled Prestige Beds to quantify its sustainability impact through TFR Group’s CO2 impact certificates. By Jan 2025, the retailer had recycled over 2000 mattresses, with significant savings in carbon emissions.

The Benefits: Local Collaboration, National Impact

The proximity of TFR Group’s recycling facilities to Prestige Beds has been a practical advantage, but James emphasised that this partnership goes beyond convenience:
“Even if TFR Group wasn’t on our doorstep, we’d still work with them. Their service is unparalleled, and any minor issues are resolved immediately with minimum fuss. They’re an extension of our business.”

Zoe Flynn, Head of Sales and Marketing at TFR Group, echoed this sentiment:
“It’s an absolute pleasure working with Prestige Beds. Their dedication to their customers and sustainability aligns perfectly with our mission to create a circular economy. Collaborating with such a respected family business is something we’re very proud of.”

A Shared Vision for the Future

Prestige Beds has ambitious plans for growth, including new stores and an enhanced online presence. As part of this expansion, sustainability remains a key priority. The rejuvenation service offered by TFR Group plays a critical role, giving Prestige Beds the confidence to explore national sales opportunities with reduced risk and environmental impact.

“Our partnership with TFR Group has transformed how we think about waste and sustainability,” said James. “The CO2 saving certificates they provide annually are not just a nice-to-have; they’re proof of the positive difference we’re making and a motivator to do even more.”

The Next Steps

The collaboration with TFR Group will continue to underpin these efforts, ensuring that sustainability remains a key component of its business model. The partnership between Prestige Beds and TFR Group demonstrates how local collaboration can drive national impact. Through mattress recycling and rejuvenation, Prestige Beds has significantly reduced its environmental footprint while enhancing its customer offering. This case study showcases a sustainable business model that not only supports the planet but also creates a competitive edge in an evolving market.
